What are top plates?
The concrete blocks that you produce with the concrete moulds from our
assortment have convenient knobs and recesses, allowing you to stack the
concrete blocks on top of each other. You do not need cement (or other
products) to attach the blocks to each other. However, at the top of a
structure, such as a wall, you usually do not want any protrusions to be
visible. With our handy top plates, you can finish the top of a concrete block
smoothly without needing a separate concrete mould. This way, you save on the
purchase of new moulds while still creating versatile structures!
Process residual concrete with Betonblock®'s concrete moulds and top
plates
Just like our concrete moulds, you can use our top plates to process all your
residual concrete, from leftover concrete mixture to concrete rubble. This
way, you save on the costs of residual concrete disposal and concrete rubble
removal, and you produce new, full-fledged concrete products that you can then
profit from.

Tip: Do not forget the release agent
Do not forget to spray your moulds and top plates with
release agent
before pouring concrete into the moulds. If you do not do this, the steel and
concrete will not separate after curing.

Frequently asked questions about top plates for concrete block molds
With a top plate, you can use a standard concrete block mold to produce a concrete block with a smooth, flat top. This is useful for the top row of a wall or for a structure where you want to attach something to the top later. Below you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about using and combining Betonblock® top plates.
How do I use a top plate?
Place the top plate inside the concrete block mold before pouring the concrete. The plate creates a flat top surface on the finished block instead of studs. Apply release agent thoroughly to both the concrete block mold and the top plate beforehand so the cured concrete can be removed easily from the steel. Always check that the top plate is correctly and securely positioned before pouring.
Can I combine any concrete block mold with a top plate?
A suitable top plate is available for many common concrete block molds. The dimensions of the top plate must match the mold you are using. Betonblock® offers top plates in different sizes for different concrete block molds. Always check which top plate is compatible with your specific mold.
What can I use a top plate for?
A top plate is particularly useful when you need a concrete block with a smooth top surface. For example, you can use these blocks for the top row of a concrete block wall, a site boundary or another structure where you do not want exposed studs. A flat surface also makes it easier to install fencing or other elements on top of the block.
What are the advantages of using a top plate with a standard mold?
The main advantage is that you can use the same standard concrete block mold to produce both blocks with studs and blocks with a flat top. This means you do not need to purchase a separate concrete block mold for each finish. It makes your production more flexible and can reduce investment costs. Betonblock® top plates are also designed for repeated and long-term use.
When can I remove the top plate from the mold?
Only remove the top plate once the concrete has cured sufficiently to retain its shape without being damaged. The exact timing depends on the concrete mix and conditions such as temperature and humidity. Applying enough release agent beforehand helps prevent the concrete from sticking to the top plate and makes it easier to remove once the concrete is strong enough.
Can I combine a top plate with partition walls or other accessories?
Yes, with certain concrete block molds you can combine a top plate with a suitable partition wall. This allows you to produce smaller concrete blocks with a flat top, for example. The possible combinations depend on the dimensions and design of your concrete block mold, partition wall and top plate. Always check that the accessories are compatible with each other.
Are there also concrete block molds with a fixed flat top?
Yes. In addition to separate top plates, Betonblock® also offers Flat Top concrete block molds. These molds are specifically designed to produce concrete blocks with a flat top. A Flat Top mold can be a good choice if you mainly produce blocks with a smooth top surface. A separate top plate offers more flexibility if you want to use the same standard mold to produce both blocks with studs and blocks with a flat top.
