How long does a concrete block last?
If you use the correct mix of cement, water, sand, and possibly gravel, a concrete block can withstand high pressure and last a long time, around fifty to one hundred years. This makes concrete blocks one of the most durable building materials in the world.
That said, there are several factors that can influence the lifespan of a concrete block, such as:
- Weather conditions
- Contact with acids, salts, or other aggressive substances
- Overloading
- Installation on an unstable surface
Impregnating concrete: what is it, how do you do it, and what are the benefits?
Some factors that shorten the lifespan of your concrete blocks are beyond your control. For example, you cannot decide whether it rains constantly at a project site or not.
Fortunately, there is a way to protect your concrete blocks: impregnating the concrete. This means treating the blocks with a special product that makes the material water-repellent and dirt-resistant. As a result, moisture, oil, and other liquids are prevented from penetrating the concrete. This helps extend the lifespan of your blocks.
What are the benefits of impregnating concrete blocks?
Impregnating concrete blocks offers several advantages:
- Water-repellent blocks: moisture penetrates the concrete less quickly, which reduces the risk of frost damage.
- Less mold and algae growth: because moisture has less chance to penetrate the concrete, biological growth occurs less easily.
- Less surface contamination: oil, grease, and other contaminants do not penetrate the block, making cleaning easier.
- Longer lifespan: the surface remains in good condition for longer and wears down more slowly.
- The appearance remains the same: your blocks stay in good condition for longer. This is especially important if you plan to resell them after using them yourself.
How do you impregnate concrete blocks?
Impregnating concrete blocks requires some preparation. Also keep in mind that the treatment needs to be repeated every few years.
Start when the temperature is above 5°C, as the product will not penetrate the concrete properly in cold conditions. First, inspect the surface. If you see cracks or holes, repair them and allow the repair to dry for a few days.
Next, clean the concrete block thoroughly so that dirt, grease, and old coatings are removed. If you apply the product on a contaminated surface, it will penetrate the dirt instead of the concrete.
After cleaning, allow the concrete to dry completely. Then apply the impregnation product using a wide brush or paint roller. On floors, you can pour the product and spread it evenly across the surface.
For the best result, apply two wet-on-wet layers so the product can penetrate deeply into the concrete. After application, allow the surface to cure properly before putting it back into use or placing loads on it.
Reusing concrete blocks: what should you pay attention to?
The blocks you produce with our concrete block moulds can be reused in multiple projects. Especially when you impregnate the blocks, they can last for a very long time. Still, it is important to inspect the blocks periodically for cracks and repair any damage in time.
How do you repair a concrete block?
If you want to repair a concrete block, you will need fresh concrete mortar. Fill the damaged or hollow areas with this mortar and allow it to harden.
If a crack is very deep, carry out the repair in several stages. Wait about twelve hours between each layer before applying new mortar.
Want to learn more about producing reusable concrete blocks?
The lifespan of a concrete block starts with a solid foundation. The higher the quality of the mould you pour the concrete into, the better the quality of the finished block. That is why our concrete block moulds are designed to deliver a strong, clean and durable result.
The newly rounded corners on the knobs and studs also reduce the risk of chipping and cracking. Betonblock® is the only provider on the market to offer these knobs and studs, ensuring your blocks are not only strong but also remain in excellent condition for longer.
