BETONBLOCK® BARRIER MOULDS: SAFETY FIRST!

 
Need a good way to manage traffic? Concrete road barriers are more commonly known as Jersey barriers, which are used to separate lanes all over the world. Over the years, the design of these important barriers has evolved. When it was found that cars colliding with a Jersey barrier at high speeds would tend to flip over because of the slanted base, the design was updated to create today’s safer barrier. The great advantage of concrete barriers is that they are ideal for temporary works, as their cast-in anchors or forklift notches make them easy to pick up and transport to the next project.
 

Modular mould for concrete barricades

The Betonblock® barrier mould is a modular mould for cast concrete barricades and barriers that are used to separate lanes. The concrete barriers fit together perfectly and feature specially designed guides to safely channel traffic. Barriers are also used for roadblocks and diversions, as well as to protect pedestrians and road workers during the construction of (new) roads or roadworks. The barrier moulds from Betonblock® are a quick and easy way to produce concrete barriers. Important! The concrete barriers are only suitable for roads in built-up areas or with a speed limit of 50 km/h.
 

What types of barrier moulds do you sell?

Betonblock® has several types of barrier moulds, but the most popular one is 2 metres long and 90 cm tall. Since smaller barriers provide more flexibility in bends, Betonblock® also has barriers with a partition, which makes it possible to cast two 1 m barriers at the same time. The partition is also sold separately. To create linkable barriers, simply insert cast-in connectors into the mould prior to casting.
 

What barrier mould accessories do you have?

The cast-in connectors are sold separately by Betonblock®, along with a special filling aid with sloping walls for easy casting. Moulds come with forklift notch inserts to make it easier to move and transport the concrete barriers, but you can also choose to use cast-in anchors. What are the advantages of Betonblock® barrier moulds?

What is the difference between a concrete barrier and standard concrete blocks or retaining walls?

A concrete barrier is specifically designed to guide, separate and restrict traffic flows and work areas. The distinctive profile of a Jersey barrier helps guide traffic along the barrier. Standard concrete blocks, on the other hand, are used for a wide range of structures, such as walls, storage bays and site boundaries. Retaining walls have an L-shaped design and are mainly used to retain soil, manage differences in ground level, create storage facilities and provide water-retaining solutions. The most suitable concrete solution therefore depends on the function and conditions of the project.

 

Which size concrete barrier should I choose?

The standard Betonblock® barrier mould measures 200x54x90 cm and produces a two-metre-long barrier. For situations where shorter elements offer greater flexibility, such as bends or smaller restricted areas, a divider can be used. This makes it possible to cast two barriers of approximately one metre each in the same mould. When choosing the right configuration, consider the required length of the barrier, the available space, the layout of the route and how the barriers will be positioned and moved.

 

What applications are concrete barriers suitable for?

Concrete barriers can be used for applications including lane separation, road closures, diversions and securing work areas. They can also help separate pedestrians and road workers from passing traffic and clearly divide temporary zones or sites. Betonblock® indicates that barriers produced with these barrier moulds are suitable for roads in built-up areas or situations with a maximum speed of 50 km/h. Local regulations and project-specific requirements should always be checked for each traffic or security application.

 

Can Betonblock® concrete barriers be connected and extended to create longer barriers?

Yes, it is possible to produce connectable concrete barriers. Special steel connection profiles can be placed in the barrier mould before casting. These profiles are embedded in the concrete during production, allowing the finished barriers to be connected to one another. Multiple individual elements can therefore be combined to create a longer, continuous barrier. This makes the system suitable for projects where the required barrier length may vary.

 

What are the advantages of concrete barriers compared with traditional metal guardrails or temporary fencing?

Concrete barriers provide a heavy and robust physical separation while also helping to guide traffic flows. Unlike temporary fencing, they create a solid separation between areas such as traffic lanes, pedestrian zones and work areas. Another practical advantage is that the barriers can be reused: cast-in lifting anchors or forklift recesses can make it easier to move them and transport them to another project. Concrete barriers, metal guardrails and temporary fencing each have different functions and safety classifications. The appropriate solution should therefore always be selected according to the application, traffic situation and applicable safety regulations.

 

Which accessories are available for barrier moulds?

Betonblock® offers various accessories for producing, connecting and handling concrete barriers. A connection profile set makes it possible to produce connectable barriers, while a special filling aid makes filling the barrier mould easier. Other available accessories include a concrete vibrator for compacting the concrete, release oil and an oil pump, a pouring table, finishing screed and pressure washer. Forklift recess profiles can be used to facilitate the movement of barriers. Cast-in lifting anchors and corresponding lifting equipment, such as anchor magnets, rubber grommets and universal lifting hooks, can also be used. The accessories you need depend on your production process and how the barriers will be moved and positioned after casting.
