Frequently asked questions about accessories for concrete blocks

With the right accessories, you can make the production of concrete blocks easier and more efficient. These include release oil for easy demolding, a concrete vibrator for proper compaction and a mold opener for easily opening the concrete block mold. Below, we answer the most frequently asked questions about accessories used when producing concrete blocks.

How long should you vibrate concrete?

There is no fixed vibration time that applies to every concrete mix and concrete block mold. Vibrate the concrete briefly and carefully at each position until you see that air bubbles have significantly reduced and the concrete around the vibrator is properly compacted. Then move the vibrator to the next position. The required time depends on factors such as the consistency and quantity of the concrete and the dimensions of the mold. Insufficient vibration can cause trapped air and voids, while excessive vibration can lead to segregation of the concrete.

Why shouldn't you stir concrete with a concrete vibrator?

A concrete vibrator is designed to compact concrete, not to move or stir the concrete inside the mold. Lower the vibrator into the concrete in a controlled manner and allow the vibrations to do the work. Using the vibrator as a stirring tool can move the concrete mix unnecessarily or cause segregation. It also increases the risk of the vibrator coming into contact with the steel mold or other components. Work systematically instead and move the vibrator from one position to the next.

Why should you oil concrete molds?

Applying release oil to the inside of the concrete mold before pouring helps prevent the hardened concrete from sticking to the steel mold. This makes the concrete block easier to demold and reduces the risk of damaging the block. Release oil also helps keep the mold clean and protects the steel against corrosion. Applying release oil correctly and regularly therefore also contributes to the maintenance of your concrete molds.

How do I use release oil on my concrete mold?

Before pouring the concrete, apply a thin and even layer of release oil to all internal surfaces of the mold that will come into contact with the fresh concrete. You can use an oil pump with a spray gun to distribute the release oil evenly across the surface. Make sure the entire contact surface is covered and avoid applying excessive amounts of oil in individual areas. The mold is then ready to be filled with concrete.

How soon can you demold concrete?

The right time to demold depends on the concrete mix, temperature, environmental conditions, dimensions of the block and the development of the concrete's strength. Only demold the block once the concrete has gained sufficient strength to retain its shape and be removed without damage. Demolding too early can damage edges, corners or other parts of the concrete block. Always take the properties of the concrete and the curing conditions into account before opening the mold.

Can I use the accessories for concrete slabs, retaining walls and other concrete products?

Several Betonblock® accessories can be used for different types of concrete products. Release oil, oil pumps, finishing tools and cleaning equipment, for example, can also be useful when producing concrete slabs, retaining walls and concrete barriers. Which accessories are suitable depends on the concrete product and mold being used. Always check whether the specific accessory is suitable for your application.

How should I prepare a concrete mold before applying release oil?

Make sure the inside of the concrete mold is clean before applying release oil. Remove any remaining concrete residue and other dirt so that the oil can be distributed evenly across the surface. At the same time, check that the mold and its locking mechanisms are in good condition. Then apply a thin, even layer of release oil to all surfaces that will come into contact with the fresh concrete. The mold is now ready for the next pour.

How much concrete release oil do I need per m²?

One liter of Betonblock® release oil can be used to treat approximately 30 to 50 m² of surface area. A 20-liter container is therefore sufficient for at least 600 m². Actual consumption can vary depending on the application method and the surface of the mold. Apply the oil in a thin and even layer, as using more release oil than necessary does not automatically result in better demolding.

What happens if concrete is vibrated incorrectly?

Incorrect compaction can affect both the appearance and quality of the concrete block. Insufficient vibration can leave trapped air, voids and poorly filled areas in the concrete. This can result in a less even surface and may create weak spots. Excessive or incorrect vibration can cause segregation, where the different components of the concrete mix begin to separate. Use the concrete vibrator carefully and evenly throughout the entire mold.

How do you easily open a concrete block mold?

A Betonblock® concrete block mold can be easily opened using the corresponding mold opener. Once the concrete has hardened sufficiently, first release the locking mechanisms of the mold. Then use the mold opener to carefully separate the mold from the concrete block. If the inside of the mold was properly treated with release oil before pouring, the hardened concrete will separate more easily from the steel mold. Do not force the mold open if the concrete has not hardened sufficiently or if the block is still adhering to the mold.
