Concrete blocks are heavy and must therefore be moved using the right lifting equipment. Depending on the weight, dimensions and the way you want to lift the block, you can use concrete block clamps, lifting beams, lifting chains or cast-in lifting anchors. Below you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about Betonblock® lifting equipment.
Concrete blocks can be lifted in different ways. A concrete block clamp grips the outside of the block and can be connected to suitable lifting equipment using a lifting beam. Another option is to cast lifting anchors into the concrete block during production. Once the concrete has reached sufficient strength, suitable lifting clutches and chains can be attached to the anchors. The best method depends on the weight, dimensions and application of the block. Before every lift, always check the permitted load of all components and make sure no one is positioned beneath a suspended load.
Choose a concrete block clamp based on both the width and weight of the block. The CL40 has a clamping range of 30 to 40 cm and a maximum load capacity of 2,000 kg. The CL60 is suitable for blocks between 30 and 60 cm wide and has a maximum load capacity of 2,500 kg. The CL80 has a clamping range of 40 to 80 cm and a maximum load capacity of 3,750 kg. The weight of your concrete block must always remain within the permitted capacity of the selected clamp and all other lifting equipment being used.
You do not automatically need every type of lifting equipment. The components you need depend on the lifting method you choose. A concrete block clamp, for example, is used together with a suitable lifting beam and lifting machine. If you choose cast-in spherical head anchors, you will also need suitable lifting clutches and a compatible lifting chain. Always assemble the complete lifting system according to the concrete block and the way you intend to move it.

First determine the weight and dimensions of the concrete block. Then select lifting equipment with a working range and permitted load capacity suitable for that block. Consider the complete lifting system: not only the clamp or anchor, but also the lifting beam, chain, lifting clutch, lifting machine and all connections must be suitable for the load. Never exceed the maximum permitted load of the weakest component in the system.
Not every lifting device is suitable for every concrete block. Concrete block clamps, for example, have a specific clamping range and maximum load capacity. When using anchors, the anchor type, load, position and other components of the lifting system must also be suitable for the specific concrete block. Always check in advance which combination is appropriate for the dimensions and weight of your block.
A double lifting beam offers additional possibilities when you want to pick up concrete blocks or concrete slabs in both the longitudinal and transverse direction. The Betonblock® double lifting beam provides a second attachment option and has a maximum load capacity of 5,000 kg. Which lifting beam you need depends on how you want to pick up the block, the concrete block clamp being used and the required capacity of the complete lifting system.
This depends on the lifting system you use. A concrete block clamp grips the outside of the cured concrete block and is connected to the lifting machine using a suitable lifting beam. With a lifting anchor system, the anchors are positioned correctly in the concrete block mold before pouring. Once the concrete has reached sufficient strength, a suitable lifting clutch can be connected to the spherical head anchor. Always follow the product specifications and safety instructions for all lifting components being used.
The anchor magnet is used to hold the spherical head anchor in the desired position in the steel concrete block mold before pouring. The spherical head anchor is connected to the magnet using the matching rubber recess former. Position the magnet in the required location and check before pouring that the anchor is correctly and securely positioned. The exact position of the lifting anchor is important for safely lifting the finished block and must therefore be suitable for the weight, geometry and planned lifting configuration.
A spherical head anchor is positioned in the concrete block mold before pouring and is then cast into the concrete. An anchor magnet and rubber recess former can be used to keep the anchor in position during pouring. The anchor must be sufficiently embedded in the concrete and positioned correctly. Always determine the position and required anchor capacity based on the block weight, concrete strength, lifting configuration and specifications of the anchor system being used.
The required number of lifting anchors cannot be determined by the weight of the block alone. The dimensions, center of gravity, anchor positions, lifting angles, concrete strength and load on each anchor must also be considered. Always use the prescribed lifting and anchor plan for the specific concrete block. Do not automatically assume, for example, that one 2.5-ton anchor is sufficient for a block weighing less than 2.5 tons.
For concrete blocks between 30 and 40 cm wide, you can use the CL40, provided the block does not weigh more than 2,000 kg. The CL60 has a clamping range of 30 to 60 cm and a maximum load capacity of 2,500 kg. For blocks between 40 and 80 cm wide, the CL80 is available with a maximum load capacity of 3,750 kg. Always check both the actual block width and its weight before selecting a clamp.
The anchor magnet is a reusable tool and does not remain inside the finished concrete block. Once the concrete has cured sufficiently and the block can be safely demolded, you can remove the magnet from the steel mold and reuse it. Remove the magnet according to the product instructions and take care not to damage the magnet, the mold or the young concrete.
A system with cast-in spherical head anchors requires more than just the anchors themselves. During casting, a suitable anchor magnet and rubber recess former are used. To lift the finished block, you will need a compatible universal lifting clutch and lifting chain connected to lifting equipment with sufficient capacity. Always make sure that the load capacities of all components are compatible and inspect the lifting equipment for wear or damage before use.
